The Year of Aquaponics: 2012

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Portable Farms Ltd. designates this year as: The Year of Aquaponics

Aquaponics technology, especially using the Portable Farms™ Aquaponics Systems, can be a boon to any community, city, company or investor who is willing to make the investment in time and money.

“The number of people living in water-stressed countries is projected to climb from 500 million to three billion by 2025.” – ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF IRRIGATION: A REVIEW – Claudio O. Stockle – State of Washington Water Research Center Washington State University

Aquaponics is a local phenomenon and provides the following benefits based on a US$1,000,000 investment:

  • License to build ten to twelve Portable Farms™ Aquaponics Systems including all of the materials and components
  • One hectare of marginal land near markets to be used – not necessary to be contiguous
  • 40 people will have permanent jobs – this does not include the construction crews
  • Each US$25,000 creates employment for one person
  • Each 275m2 (3,000 sq ft) supports one wage earner
  • Each square meter requires US$90 of investment (US$9.00 per sq ft)
  • Solar power can be used and is a slight extra cost
  • A water supply is necessary, not large but consistent.
  • Provides over 700,000 vegetables and 100,000 kilos of fish per year
  • No need to ship any of the production, all of the output will be consumed locally

When a government/company purchases a Portable Farms™ Aquaponics Systems Technology License they receive a huge package of benefits which includes all-of-the above plus:

  • Onsite training for the Module construction crews
  • Full online training for all operators
  • Updated technology as it becomes available

The Year of Aquaponics is only one of the early steps in creating a sane, sustainable world for the survivors of this century. Become a part of something that can ensure your children and grandchildren are part of the solution that you helped to put in place.

If you have any doubts that THIS is the year of aquaponics, give me your gut’s answer to these questions?

  • Can the world’s economy, and more specifically the economy of a community/city/province, become self sustaining?
  • Can the corporations who produce and deliver nearly everything we are currently consuming shift into a green, sustainable mode of business?

Interestingly enough the answer now appears to be a qualified ‘yes.’ Please be forewarned this process is not going to be easy or fun, but in order to survive as a civilization it appears it is the only currently available, viable route away from total economic collapse.

The cancerous growth of corporations and governments we are now supporting will soon come to an end. Several companies have actually begun the process of green sustainable business models based on the work of a company called Trucost, a London-based consultancy. The company has calculated that the world’s top 3,000 public companies are responsible for a third of all global environmental damage and they have some suggestions on how to reduce these companies’ impact and still have them successful.

The premise that growth is necessary for corporations to exist, may in-and-of-itself be flawed. The same fallacy has permeated the concept of governments which is that of continual growth and increased power and control over the masses, errr, peons, uh, taxpayers, oh, right, the people, of the country.  For hundreds of years there was very little need for government except to fight wars, raise taxes and gather power for a few select people. Starting at the beginning of the 20th Century, there was a not-so-subtle shift to the cowboy mentality of ‘he with the biggest stick rules,’ and especially after WW II when the US, a normally quiet, backward, agriculturally-based country was suddenly thrust onto the world stage as ‘Leader of the Free World’.

It stands to reason that when an unqualified person is thrust into the limelight, they will make stuff up to cover their fear. That’s what happened to companies around the world after WW II. They made up the rules as they went along because governments were too weak to run them and governments could not rule outside their own borders. The multinationals began their reign of terror that brought us everything we have today. Now that reign is coming to a grinding halt as the system itself becomes dysfunctional.
